The rigid airship hangar is built in phases. Once complete, it can produce rigid airships.

Rigid Airship Hangar is a Monument building which allows to construct rigid airships (as well as the non-rigid Mapinguari and Boreas airships if The Passage DLC icon The Passage DLC is also active). It requires Empire of the Skies DLC icon Empire of the Skies DLC, it can be built in the Old World (and Cape Trelawney) and in the New World, with slight differences in resources required. It is the only monument which can be placed multiple times on one island. Like other monuments it is built over several stages, with each stage taking time to complete and requiring specific resources and workforce during every construction phase.

Monument construction[]

The construction of the Rigid Airship Hangar is divided into four stages. The first stage requires placing the foundation, which is unlocked after advancing to 600 Obreros Obreros in the New World. The next three stages are built over time and require large amounts of construction materials and workforce. Materials need to be delivered to the construction site so the hangar has to be connected to a warehouse or trading post.

When there is not enough free workforce available, the construction can still be continued but at a slower pace, requiring more time to complete the current phase. Workforce can be mobilised to focus on the monument construction, thus shifting the lack of workforce to other buildings that utilise the same workforce type, resulting in lower productivity of those buildings.

Constructing airships[]

The purpose of rigid airship hangar is to construct airships. Every available airship requires specific amounts of construction materials and influence. Those resources are allocated immediately when the airship is selected for construction. The construction process lasts several minutes, depending on the type of the airship. When the hangar is idle, it does not use any workforce and its maintenance cost is lowered - the maintenance cost is -220 if the inactive upkeep setting is on, and it is zero if inactive upkeep setting is off (this difficulty setting is toggled on or off while creating a new game). During construction though, the maintenance cost increases to its regular value and the necessary workforce is employed at the hangar.

Available airships[]

Several airships can be constructed at every rigid airship hangar. Some of them are unlocked only by reaching specific population thresholds. Additionally, Mapinguari and Boreas are available only with The Passage DLC icon The Passage DLC and only after the Arctic Airship Hangar Arctic Airship Hangar has been built.

All airships which can be constructed at rigid airship hangars and their unlock conditions are listed below:

Selecting and queuing airships for construction[]

To order the construction of an airship, left-click on its icon in the hangar's menu. Instead of ordering the construction of airships one airship at a time, it is possible to add several airships to the construction queue. After the currently constructed airship is built, the next airship in the queue will start being constructed. Since influence and construction materials are allocated when selecting the airship, it is impossible to plan the construction far ahead and add more airships to the queue when there is not enough influence or resources. Removing airships from the queue refunds all resources and influence invested into the airship. There are a few ways of removing an airship from the queue, in order to do that do one of the following things:

  • left-click on a button with the bin icon which appears upon hovering over an airship icon
  • right-click on the airship icon
  • left-click or right-click on the small airship icon in the list of airships in the queue

It is impossible to change the order of airships in the queue, to do that it is necessary to remove and add appropriate airships to the queue to form the desired order.

Construction time[]

The optimal construction time depends on the type of the constructed airship. The actual construction time can become longer than optimal if not enough workforce is available on the island. In case of insufficient workforce, the construction process lasts longer, proportionally to the remaining duration and the amount of workforce missing.

Workforce assignment[]

The hangar has a workforce assignment setting that can be toggled on and off by pressing the button with the bell symbol in the hangar's menu. With the setting off, the lack of workforce is equally divided between the hangars and other buildings on the same island which employ the same workforce type, thus equally reducing the efficiency of all affected buildings. With the setting on, the workforce of the same population tier is automatically assigned to the airship construction in case of a workforce deficit. When this occurs, the hangar employs as much workforce as possible, but only up to the normally required amount. This setting does not speed up the construction process, its duration cannot be shorter than the currently optimal construction time - the hangar can only act as if the exactly required amount of workforce was available. Assigning workforce to the hangar takes a part of the workforce away from other buildings on the same island which employ the same tier of workforce. In that situation those buildings experience greater workforce shortage than if the workforce assignment setting was off. Therefore this setting allows to ensure that airships are constructed as quickly as possible even when there is a workforce shortage - but at the cost of lowering productivity and efficiency of other buildings. This setting is separate for every hangar.

Rally point[]

When construction of an airship is finished, it automatically flies out of the hangar and stops at a specific location - known as the hangar's rally point. Its default location is above the hangar. However, it is possible to set a different rally point. To change it, simply right-click on the desired location when the hangar is selected, or press the button with the buoy symbol in the hangar's menu and then click on the spot within the same region, wherever the rally point is supposed to be located. To cancel selecting the rally point location, right-click on any part of the screen which is not occupied by any part of UI. When the hangar is selected, its rally point is marked by a balloon buoy floating in the air. Rally points are separate for every hangar and each hangar can have its own rally point.
