Residences are one of the most important type of buildings in your cities. Your people live in them providing workforce and income. Most of them have the same size: 3x3, scholar residences are the only exception as they are slightly larger and have size of 4x4.
All residences have to be connected to the trading post via a road. Without such a road connection their residents will move out and the residence itself will eventually turn into a ruin.

You can directly build only farmer, jornalero, explorer and shepherd residences. Scholar residences also can be placed directly but they require campus extension permits. Other residences can be obtained only via upgrading more basic residences, for example a farmer residence will transform into a worker residence when upgraded. To upgrade a residence, three requirements have to be met:
- residence has to be full
- all basic needs must be unlocked and fulfilled
- enough construction material has to be available
You can also downgrade any residence to lower tier. This can be useful if you don't have enough low tier workforce while having a surplus of high tier workforce.
Occupancy[]
All residences can house different number of people: the higher the tier of residence is, the more people can live in them. Current occupancy is determined by the fulfilment of basic needs, each fulfilled basic need adds a specific amount of residents per residential building. In order to make residences full, all their basic needs have to be maximally fulfilled. Maximal occupancy can be increased via items, The Iron Tower or in case of skyscrapers also the panorama effect.
City incidents[]

Residences can at any time become affected by city incidents: fire, riot and illness. In case of residences in The Arctic riots are disabled and illness has a special form of arctic flu. The chance of each incident happening is separate and can be influenced by various factors. A residence affected by an incident increases the chance of incidents in other buildings nearby - that is how incidents, once they start, can easily spread from one residence to another.
Appearance[]
Unlike other buildings, residences of the same type can have different appearance, which can be changed even after a residence has been built, they can also be rotated. To change the appearance of a building, use Shift+V to find the desired appearance, use , or . to rotate the residence. Residences of higher tiers automatically merge together into residential blocks. You can adjust the appearance of all your residences individually to create a city of your dreams.
