This page discusses which Consumer Goods are Balance profitable (or not), after the maintenance costs of their own Production Chain, and the addition of Taxes upon their consumption, are deducted.

An Explanation of Investigation

Three questions are asked for every Consumable Good - and the Chain that produces them:

  1. Singular Efficiency. How much profit does does a single, optimal electrified Chain make and how many people does it serve? How much does a non-electrified Production Chain make with the same output?
  2. The Crown Falls Conundrum. Once enough chains of a single consumable exist to supply more than than 5875 people of a single class upon the same island, how much profit remains for every chain added after the 40% Royal Taxes kicks in?
  3. A Serving of Cheese. There exist a method to exploit the relation between residences and the people within. What is the maximum amount of profit that can be made by exploiting this relation?

It should be noted that the calculations here only consider the maintenance costs of the building involved directly in a chain's production. These are the only costs we can be certain of.

While it's true that an electrified chain would need a fully operational Power Plant with all the maintenance cost that implies, the Power Plant might be powering several buildings, which would cause its maintenance cost to be shared among several chains. Including other extraneous necessities such as Fire and Police Stations, Warehouses and Shipping to other islands, it's up to the player to keep track whether a Chain's profits are high enough to support the additional, highly individualized infrastructure they've added on top.

Singular Efficiency

The first thing investigated is how proficient a single example of a Production Chain is at producing Consumer Goods and making a profit when their output is fully consumed by the player's populace. Money is still tight when a player starts out and it may be wise to know which production chains make the most money.

To do this, a combination of the Production Chain's buildings is taken, where all of them operate at maximum capacity, with Electricity where possible, but without items or changing work times. For the Schnapps production chain for instance, this is 2 Potato Farms and an electrified Schnapps Distillery, producing 4 Schnapps Schnapps per minute.

To compare this with the non-electrfied version, a combination of the Production Chain's buildings is taken where all of them operate at a maximum capacity, without electricity, items or changing work times, while still producing the same amount. For the same electrified Schnapps production chain, this is 2 Potato Farms and two non-electrified Schnapps Distilleries, producing 4 Schnapps Schnapps per minute.

Because the output is the same, the two are more easily compared and calculated. This is the difference between a "Normal Chain" and an "Electrified Chain" in this guide.

If a player wishes to know what a singular non-electrified production chain does, they would simply need to halve the numbers (though the amount of Royal Taxes incurred may then change).

The Crown Falls Conundrum

With the release of the Sunken Treasures DLC, an island exist in Cape Trelawney, called "Crown Falls", (a.k.a. "the big island"). This islands is massive can easily fit thousands of buildings and tens-of-thousands of people of ever social class.

There also exists within the game, a mechanism called Royal Taxes. This kicks in when 1000 people of the same social class live on the same island, at which point 1% of all that social class' income upon that island is taxed. This tax ramps up to 40% once 5875 of them live on the same island. A majority of a player's income consists of consumer goods received, so Royal Taxes can be quite burdensome.

Since Crown Falls can easily fit that many people, this guide will ask how much income is left when taxes are at 40%, and how many production chains are necessary to supply 5875 people of a social class.

More residences - and the Chains to supply them - can be build after 5875 people, but at that point, every additional chain added operates under the same 40% tax. Adding more chains will simply multiply the profits or losses of every other chain up to that point. For example, if 3 chains are enough to supply 5875 people, and if in total they operate under a profit or loss of 300 Balance, then each of them operates at a profit/loss of 100 Balance. Every additional chain added past that will also operate on a profit/loss of 100 Balance per minute.
