Mapinguari and Boreas are cargo airships, available in Empire of the Skies DLC or The Passage DLC, respectively. Both can be built in The Old World (and Cape Trelawney) or The New World in the Rigid Airship Hangar, but Boreas can also be built in The Arctic in the Arctic Airship Hangar
Helium vs Arctic Gas[]
Mapinguari is constructed using Helium and has appropriate Helium Gas Cells modifier, while Boreas variant which uses Arctic Gas receives no effects.
Helium Gas Cells
- Movement Speed: -20%
- Hitpoints +100
- Damage from Ships: -40%
- Damage from Cannons: -40%
- Maintenance Cost: +10%
- Cargo Slowdown -30%
Strategy[]
When it comes to trade, the Mapinguari and Boreas rise to the occasion and hold a commanding position that is miles above that of the competition.
Strongly affected by the wind and possessing only four slots for cargo (and two more for items) they might not be as roomy or steadfast as the Cargo Ship, but they more than make up for it with their incredible speed. Even when facing headwinds, they will only trail behind steamships by little more than a knot. They can fly circles around even the Clipper. The most important fact is that they can simply hover over any obstacle - meaning they do not have to steer around islands like surface vessels would.
The only drawbacks are the difficulties in constructing one and the eye-watering cost of maintaining it. They also cannot be used in Expeditions.
Building a Boreas requires arctic gas, which can only be extracted from the four glacial islands found in the The Arctic's North. These islands are steep and can only be supplied and settled by air. This may seem like a paradox - needing an airship to extract the gas that can build an airship - but fortunately, Old Nate is willing to part with some of his arctic gas when following the region's storyline, and this allows a player to construct their first airship to begin the cycle with.
Once that is done, players should be aware of the -1200 in maintenance costs.
