Empire of the Skies is the twelfth Anno 1800 DLC and was released on September 20, 2022. It is the second DLC of the Season 4 Pass. Its main addition are rigid airships that can be used in combat or to transport cargo quickly. Airship Platform and its modules offers a fast item transfer, and enables workforce sharing in New World. A new postal system involves using airships in order to transport mail between islands and regions, connecting the population across the world. The DLC also adds airship platform ornaments and a scenario A Clash of Couriers, about Paloma Valente and her participation in the Grand Postal Derby - a competition that requires establishing an efficient mail delivery network.
Content of the DLC[]
The main addition of Empire of the Skies DLC are rigid airships - ships that can fly and travel above the oceans and islands at high speed. They cannot be attacked by regular weaponry, they are endangered only by armed airships, flak emplacements and flak monitors. Rigid airships can be constructed in rigid airship hangars, monumental buildings available in both Old World and New World. The construction of airships requires new raw materials that can be retrieved from mountain deposits in the New World: bauxite and helium. Therefore the DLC adds the deposits of those materials to some of the New World islands, in addition to the deposits that would normally be present on those islands without this DLC.
Postal system is another important addition: every population tier except for tourists, shepherds and elders, has lifestyle needs for different types of mail. Post offices and post boxes placed in cities generate local mail which can satisfy the local mail need within the same island or can be transported to other islands as regional or overseas mail. Mail transport can be handled only by airships via specialised airship routes.
Airship platforms serve as piers for airships where they can load and unload different goods and mail. Their modules allow to set up mail transport between different islands, share workforce between multiple New World islands and to quickly transfer items between Old World and New World islands which possess item transfer modules. There are also 8 ornaments that are meant to visually and thematically accompany the airship platforms.
A new multifactory, known as supply factory, allows to produce a few different types of drop goods such as bombs or care packages. All those goods can be dropped on ships or buildings using airships and their drop shafts. Every drop good causes a specific effect on the target and it allows airships to damage harbour buildings and ships or to affect residences and goods-producing buildings.
The DLC also adds A Clash of Couriers scenario, in which Paloma Valente, a rigid airship pioneer, is invited to participate in Grand Postal Derby. In this competition she is required to set up a successful mail delivery network, collecting mail stamps and completing specific objectives in order to win against several competitors.
