Template:Infobox Buildings 2 RegionsA Charcoal Kiln produces coal from undeveloped tiles within a small radius of influence around itself. The building requires these tiles to be wooded, but the Charcoal Kiln cabin will seeds its own trees if there are none. It can be build in both The Old World at any location, or in the The Arctic upon islands where trees can grow. It is also the only building in the Arctic that does not itself require heating and it has a vital function keeping the Heater supplied with coal.
When charcoal kilns are placed in a lush forest they can start operating immediately. Otherwise trees have to be planted first, which can take from 15 seconds up to 5 minutes based on how many trees are in the influence radius. The exact waiting time is shown when placing the building, after that time the kiln will begin to produce coal while planting new trees at the same time - thus never running out of trees (if no new buildings or roads are built in the influence radius).
Productivity
It takes 30 seconds to produce 1 ton of coal so the production rate is 2 tons of coal per minute. Productivity can be changed in the Old World by adjusting working conditions and using items and electricity. In the Arctic, only items can alter productivity.
Charcoal kilns don't need their whole influence radius to be free of other buildings and roads, only 240 tiles (out of 352 in the whole radius) have to be free to achieve 100% productivity. If less number of tiles is free, the productivity drops according to the amount of occupied space.
Coal usage and production chains
Coal is an important resource obtained either from charcoal kilns or coal mines. Coal mines are twice as productive and don't lower the attractiveness of an island so charcoal kilns should be used only to make up for not having enough coal deposits.
In the beginning coal is used to produce steel beams and weapons. Later on it is used to produce many important goods such as sewing machines, light bulbs or steam carriages. It is one of the most important resources in the game as it is used in the highest number of production chains (11 chains).
Coal can be used during expeditions, it grants 15 bonus points to hunting skill per 50 tons. It can also be sold for 8 coins, or purchased for 20 coins per ton (by passive trading). Coal can be actively bought from Eli Bleakworth at his harbour for 20 coins. Coal is also requested by Sir Archibald Blake who buys it at his harbour for 16 coins.
All production chains which utilize coal are listed below. Most chains include coal mines instead of charcoal kilns - but coal mines can be easily replaced with twice as many charcoal kilns.
