Trivia[]
Caoutchouc is better known as india rubber, natural rubber, or most prominently latex, and was the first form of rubber discovered and used on an industrial scale (to serious notoriety, in some cases). It features a large number of properties that make it highly useful to industrialization; in its raw state it serves as an excellent sealant, insulator, and adhesive, though it becomes most useful when submitted to vulcanization. Vulcanized rubber is much closer to modern rubber (which is usually artificially made from petroleum byproducts), and can be used for everything from boot soles to balloons, electrical fittings to diving helmets, and -- as in Anno 1800 -- vehicle tires and other industrial fittings.
