When water runs through it, it irrigates the soil around it.

Canals: empty and filled with water from a connected water pump
Canal is an integral part of the irrigation system. When connected to a Water Pump, canals get filled with water and irrigate the land around them turning it from dry to irrigated soil. Each canal filled with water irrigates the soil in a 9x9 square area centered on the canal tile - in other words a canal tile affects 4 tiles of soil in every direction from the canal. Canal costs 5
per tile. It requires
Land of Lions DLC and can be built only in Enbesa, as soon as the region is unlocked and the first island is claimed.
Bridges[]
Unlike roads or railway, the canals cannot form a bridge across a river. Instead, the canals can be placed on different sides of a river thanks to the water pumps. Each pump has two places where canals can be connected to it - there is one spot on both sides of the river. Canals have to start on a tile adjacent to one of these spots, which are highlighted in white while placing canals.
Crossing roads or railway[]
For more information about roads, see: Roads.
Canals can also cross roads or railway without any impact on carts and trains movement or on the connections between buildings. Canal tiles built across the roads do not cost any additional resources, and when built across railway they actually cost nothing at all. Canals can be crossed not only by single one tile wide roads (railway) but also by two tile wide roads (railway). Canal has to be only one or two tiles wide to be able to allow the roads (railway) to cross the canals. However, it is impossible to form a crossing between two tile wide canals and two tile wide roads (railway).
