History and Trivia[]
Hydrogen is the simplest element in the universe, consisting of a single proton orbited by a single electron. It is the most common element in the universe, due to its simplicity and being a key component in stars and solar fusion, but usually appears on Earth in a gaseous form. This gas has a number of important properties for industrial use, including being lighter than air -- meaning it will rise above the regular atmosphere in the same way ice rises through water -- and being extremely, intensely flammable. Hydrogen also produces water when burned, as its gaseous form, H2, combines with oxygen in the atmosphere to form water, H2O -- this is the source of its name, hydro + gen, water creator.
Hydrogen is difficult to come by on Earth in its pure form due to these properties; it most commonly appears by processing hydrocarbons with steam, especially "natural gas", which is found fairly commonly in nature. The Gas in Anno 1800 represents "natural gas" most closely as a fuel, though its role in airships is a feature only pure hydrogen gas could cause.
Hydrogen is one of two gases which was commonly used for creating lighter-than-air aircraft, the other being helium. These included balloons, airships, blimps, and zeppelins, though some of these terms are used interchangably today. Despite being uncommon, hydrogen is still much more common than helium and has stronger lifting properties, making it an attractive choice; however, this is offset by its extreme explosiveness. Multiple airships were destroyed by their hydrogen lifting gas igniting and exploding, which led to it falling sharply out of favor, and hydrogen as a lifting gas is almost never seen today.
Interestingly, while the hydrogen lifting gas of the German zeppelin Hindenburg is usually stated as the reason for its destruction, modern science tends to disagree and place the blame elsewhere (though once the fire had started, the hydrogen probably didn't help matters much).
