Anno 1800 Wiki

Anno 1800 includes many different characters who can be divided into four different groups. The first group consists of competitors, who are in charge of other companies and compete with you for islands and their resources, they may become your enemies, trade partners or allies. The second group are the neutral traders, who own one small island each, they do not expand to other islands and do not compete with the player. Instead, they trade with all players and their diplomatic status cannot be changed. The third group are pirates, each of them own a small heavily defended island, they do not expand. They are hostile and send out ships which may attack all players' ships and islands. However, they engage in diplomacy and can be reasoned with, potentially becoming your valuable trade partners. The last group are all other characters who do not own any islands, are not part of the diplomacy system. They may have a role in the campaign, scenarios or various storylines and quests, or their main purpose is helping the player and informing about important events.

Competitors[]

For more details, see: Competitors

Competitors, also known as AI competitors, AI opponents or expanding characters, are characters who directly compete with the players. They are in charge of their own companies and claim islands, build cities, build and control ships and explore the world. They compete with the players for islands, building space and resources. They may win the game by destroying player's ships and taking over all player's islands or by fulfilling specific victory conditions selected by the players. They can become your enemies, trade partners or allies, depending on your actions and diplomatic relations with them. When creating a new game, you can select from 0 to 3 competitors who will compete with you during the game. Each AI opponent has a difficulty level assigned to them: easy, medium or hard, which roughly suggests how difficult it is to defeat or befriend them. They also have their own personalities and preferences so some of them will feel less or more difficult to live with, depending on your playstyle.

Neutral traders[]

For more details, see: Neutral Traders

Neutral traders are characters whose main role is trading and providing quests. They do not compete with the player, do not expand to other islands. They always have positive relations with you and your competitors and this cannot be changed at all as they do not engage in diplomacy. Each trader owns one small island in one of the regions, where you can buy and sell goods, items and in case of some traders also ships. Each trader might have different trade options available. Some of the traders regularly send out ships which also stop at your islands and can trade with you via passive trading. When creating a new sandbox game, some of the traders in Old World and New World can be disabled.

Pirates[]

For more details, see: Pirates

Pirates are characters who are generally hostile to other characters, roaming the region they are in with their warships. They do not expand, each of them owns a small island, defended by multiple cannons. Their ships are special pirate versions of regular ships, they patrol the waters of their region and attack any enemy ships in their vicinity. Pirates engage in diplomacy and can be befriended by establishing peace, trade or even alliance agreements, once they are at least peaceful they can offer you quests too. They can be valuable trade partners and when having a trade agreement with them, they function similarly to neutral traders. They buy and sell goods, items and ships. Ships they offer for sale are pirate ships or other special ships which can be obtained only either from pirates or via specific legendary items. Pirates can be disabled or enabled and their difficulty can be set to normal or hard. Increased difficulty causes pirates to become a more serious threat if you are at war with them. Pirates can be defeated by attacking their island which gets rid of them for some time. After a while, however, they may come back and resettle on their island again, unless their ships get sunk.

Other Characters[]

There are also other characters who do not belong into any specific category and have no direct impact on the gameplay. They might appear exclusively in the campaign (like Edvard Goode) or scenarios (like Yaosca Rodriguez), or in different games modes in various storylines and quests (like Biniam). Some characters are tied to specific mechanics in the game and inform the player about different game features or their progress (like Visitor informing about the activity of public moorings and special visitors arriving to your islands).

For more details about every character, see their individual pages:

(not every character has their page on the wiki yet)
